Zoom Lens

For relatively new photographers and digital slr owners it can be confusing when it comes to upgrading your kit lens. There are so many different lenses on the market covering a vast number of focal ranges and apertures that it can be very confusing to work out exactly which one you need.

This article will talk about what kind of things you should consider and will point you in the direction of one option that is little discussed about but has long been proved to be one of the best lenses out there as well as one of the cheapest!

You have so many decisions to make when trying to decide which lens to spend you money on. In my opinion the main thing you should look for in a lens is a wide aperture (or a low f number). A wide aperture give your two main benefits: firstly it lets a lot of light into the camera allowing you to take great shots in low light conditions without having to use the flash and secondly it lets you shoot with a cery shallow depth of field. A shallow depth of field lets you blur out backgrounds making close up or portrait shots stand out more and seem sharper.

Personally I feel that too many people place too much emphasis on aesthetics and certainly too much on zoom. After all why buy a lens with a huge zoom when you can zoom with your feet. OK  some specialist photographers require a zoom (say for photographing tigers) however I would much rather get a higher quality lens with less zoom than the other way round.

In my opinion the best bet for a kit lens upgrade is the Canon 50mm f1.8. It is the cheapest lens Canon sell, the worst built, the lightest, the noisiest to focus but the optics inside produce absolutely stunning results.

Hello, does anyone know if you can take a 400mm zoom lens into the AFL or cricket matches?

I recently bought a 100-400mm zoom lens and was devastated when I was not granted entry to either the Australian Open tennis or an A League soccer match with it. Nothing allowed over 200mm as it is considered professional.
I am wondering whether this is the same for cricket and AFL, but I am hoping it is not.
