Smudge Brush

Autumn themes are rich and warm, as such they are usually my favorite seasonal themes for scrapbooking.

1. Autumn Leaves. Obvious? Perhaps, but still fun. If you can't find a suitable themed paper you can easily create your own to fit this theme. Using dark green or burnt orange card (or ivory card and dark green and deep red inks) stipple distress inks on your background card using a real sponge. You can then use a soft dry brush to smudge the inks softly so they merge, creating a misty unfocused background of autumn color. Make a decorative outer edge (the left edge for the left hand page, the right edge for the right hand page) by stamping with a leaf stamp and embossing in gold to make the result stand out. Add your pictures on a matte of a contrasting autumn color (say burnt orange if your background is dark green) and if you want to add more, cut the matte in the shape of a sycamore or maple leaf. You can create a journaling tag in the same way and add assorted brown and gold fibres as decoration. As a final touch add tiny vellum stickers of autumn leaves and you'll have a lovely leafy layout.

2. Food For Thought. If you've ever picked berries and made jam, or made pie from home grown apples, you've experienced the wonder of harvesting your own, home grown food. No matter how the technology around us advances there is still a particular sense of achievement in growing something, whether it's fruit on a tree, grapes on a vine, herbs or vegetables from the garden. If you've harvested anything of your own, or if you plan to, record the event in your scrapbook with pictures of before and after as well as a recipe or two. If your pictures are digital, and most are these days, why not use the graphics program on your computer to create a collage of all the 'before' pictures for one page, and then add a picture of a completed pie, wine bottle or meal, along with the recipe, on the facing page. For journaling, cut out (or get die cuts) in the shape of vegetables, and add colorful vegetable stickers and you'll preserve your achievement for future generations.

3. Autumn Mists. I used to drive through Runnymede, the site where King John signed the Magna Carta, on my way to work each day. In the autumn, mist used to lie right on the surface of the river, giving it a really otherworldly feel, just like something from a legend. Since then I've always thought of autumn as slightly supernatural. An ideal background is a paper showing trees, either in their autumn colours or stark and mysterious. Create the misty effect by covering the page with vellum, you might like to attach the vellum with a leaf shaped brad. You can make an interesting border by using a leaf shaped punch on the vellum to allow little leaf shaped patches of the background to show through. Add a heading with chipboard letters, you can easily color these by stippling with green or rust distress inks, such as those in the Tim Holtz collection.

4. Knights of Old. Not specific to autumn, a Knights or Heraldry theme uses all the autumn colors with the addition of copper and gold. This sort of theme is useful for a family tree style page, where you might put together information about your grandparents and their parents and create your own idea of a family shield or crest. Use brown, dark red and green and create shield shaped mattes for your pictures, trimmed with gold either from peel-offs or conventional embossing. Use a red ribbon to show the connections between the pictures. You can complete the layout with one of my favorite embellishments, a reverse emboss. If you can find a dark red embossing powder and a monogram stamp, take a circle or shield shape of card around 1 inch in size and start building up the red embossing powder on it in layers. Keep adding more and more, all the while using your embossing tool to keep the powder hot. Once you have built a number of layers, ink your monogram and stamp it hard into the thick embossing powder. The result should look very much like an old fashioned seal. Add a red ribbon below it and attach to your very aristocratic looking layout.

5. Halloween. If you have pictures of your little ones dressed for Halloween, you need a Halloween layout. Die Cuts are ideal for this but you'll also find plenty of stickers in the shape of ghosts, skeletons, bats, witches hats and pumpkins. Use these and decorate the page with glitter and bright colors. Large witches hats make great journaling tags, while pumpkins make great mattes for photographs, especially if they are round. As a background black is ideal, if you find your witches hats and bats don't show up, either cover them in adhesive stars, or rub the edge with silver ink and emboss to make the shapes stand out. Use metallic sakura pens for your journaling and you'll create a layout which will preserve all your Halloween memories for years to come.

Many of these layouts can be made using simple scrapbooking embellishments and Distress ink Pads from Dinglefoot scrapbooking supplies.

[PICS] Which brush set should I get?

I'm taking a make up workshop in a few months, and which make up brush kit should I get? These brushes are extremely popular here in my country. I'm 16 and my mom gave me enough money for the 16 pcs set, but if I get the 12 pcs I'll have extra money for something else.

I would go with the 12 pc, and I do agree to some extent with the other poster - there are brushes that you will seldom use, and the ones you do use may not last as long as you'd like. Take it from me, I have bought art brushes, cheap brushes, dupes, etc. and with all the money I have spent on brushes that just don't last as long I could have purchased the full set of MAC which IS known for quality. Since having my light bulb moment, I have purchased only the MAC brushes that I KNOW I need, rather than making it my mission to collect them all. If you want to buy something that's more affordable than I'd go with SIGMA, a lot of people have said that they're comparable to MAC brushes, and are good quality.
