Led Lighted

There are numerous options available for those thinking about tricking out their PC with some lighting modifications. Following are some of the most common lighting configurations and suggestions for applying them to create some really outrageous mods.

Cold Cathodes

Also known as CCFL (cold cathode florescent lighting), these are the most common case lights in use today. They are very thin, and very bright enhanced florescent tubes that are generally installed using adhesive strips. They come in a variety of colors and in different lengths from four inches to 15 inches and are ideal for running along the interior edges and corners of a clear case.

To enhance the cold cathode strip even further, you can get your CCFL tubes with a special inverter that includes build in sound activation circuitry that will cause them to pulse with your computer's sound output. These sound reactive cold cathode tubes usually have controls that allow you to adjust the sensitivity and to turn the feature off entirely so that the lights work independent of the sound system.

LED Lighting Modules

There are hundreds of LED products designed specifically for computer case modification. You can get LED case handles, feet and everything in between. There are also LED strips which can be cut to length and used similar to the CCFL tubes. LEDs are best used in combination with CCFL lights to cast light onto components or to create shadows, up-lighting, down-lighting or outward glow from within the PC.

Meteor Lights

LEDs that run in a "chase" pattern and emulate the look of energy surging through the light run are becoming more popular recently. These are basically LED strips in which the individual LEDs turn on and off in quick succession.

There are also laser LED lights which create a really cool effect. They usually have 3 or 5 very strong LEDs that shoot light outward and can allow your computer to literally light most of the room it resides in. Again, these can create a special kind of effect when combined with a well installed CCFL outline of the same, or complimentary color.

LED Lighted Fans

LED fans can be purchased with LED lighting installed and pre-wired. The LEDs are usually along the blade edges and/or inside the fan casing. A alternate color from the rest of your lighting is often a good choice.

EL Wire

If all the prior options still don't quite scratch your creative itch, check out Electroluminescent Wire (EL Wire) lights. EL is very thin illuminating wire that can be cut to any length and/or bent to any shape. It is ideal for wrapping around cables to accentuate different cable runs deep inside your computer case.

How do I convert a 12v LED light so I can plug it into a wall socket?

I have a 12v LED light bar from a car and need to convert it so I can plug it into a wall socket which I assume is a standard 120v. Any tips or ideas how I can do it.

you will have to buy or build a 12 volt power supply. If you're handy, you can do it with a step-down transformer and a full-wave bridge rectifier. The power supplies are also sold in electronics supply houses.
