Synthetic perfumes - what is the concern?

Many perfumes on the shelves in regular chemists, duty free and department stores are made with synthetic chemicals and are, rarely, just aromatherapy oils, despite what the label says. Labels can make claims that are not backed up in the contents of the perfume. 'Natural' is a widely abused term in the personal care industry, as is 'nature' frequently used where there is precious little natural about the contents. These claims can be nothing more than a marketing tool and hide a myriad of synthetic fragrances. Thus it appears the consumer is not as protected as they might assume. Cosmetics and perfumes are often regulated by industry rather than a safety governing body; it is rather like the fox guarding the hen house.

Why is regular perfume best avoided?

Have you ever been walking on a busy street only to walk past someone wearing perfume and notice that your eyes are itchy and you feel overwhelmed by the over-powering scent of their perfume? Or have you sat on a plane seat only to find you can smell women's perfume on your clothes long after the flight has landed?

Modern fragrances, perfumes and scents are very powerful, they contain many synthetic chemicals designed to make the aroma stay around for a long time, they are persistent in our environment. They persist on our clothes, furnishings and in the air. Sadly phthalates actually provide the perfume with sticking power to stay on the skin and increase the time the smell lingers. Phthalates are now known to be harmful to our hormones and endocrine system, and a documentary recently aired, in Canada, called "Disappearing Males" highlighted this very serious issue.

What is fragrance?

Fragrance when listed on a label can be a blend of some two hundred different ingredients, none of which, by law, has to be listed on the label, thus you will not see phthalates listed on a perfume bottle label. In terms of public health problems cosmetics are not really on the radar but yet many have a chemical sensitivity to perfume and judging by what is in many perfumes, unsurprising.

The perfume industry is worth millions of dollars annually and thousands of tons of synthetic fragrance are produced, each year, with relatively few legislative checks, or restrictions. Environmental scientists and health researchers are becoming increasingly concerned about their affects on our health as well as their persistence in the environment.

There are increasing reports of clinical studies showing highly fragranced products causing and adding to health conditions like as allergies and asthma. One other concern that troubles me the most is the bio-accumulation of synthetic fragrance chemicals in human tissue and the long-term impact of suspected hormone disruptors. Synthetic fragrances can add to both indoor and outdoor air pollution, this is especially noticed in winter, when windows and doors are opened less frequently.

What alternatives are there?

There are alternatives to synthetic chemicals perfumes, which are certified organic perfumes that use certified organic essential oils in a base of jojoba oil. Natural perfumery, with a 4000 year history is linked to nature, beauty and nurturing ritual. Not only are real perfumes aromatically pleasing, but they impart therapeutic benefits, formulated with rare and expensive raw materials including essential oils and absolutes. Smelling a rose growing in the garden is an exquisite scent and that is what I feel real perfumery is, the distilled oils from plants rather than synthetically man-made synthetic chemicals. Perfume is precious, and a treat for anointing on our body, perhaps a return to real perfumery is wiser and healthier?

Melanie Lyensky looks so much better than she did in Heavenly Creatures...?

In "Heavenly Creatures" Melanie Lyensky looked very plain. But in "Ever After" and now- she looks so much better. Her face is much more attractive. How did this happen- did she get a makeover? I'm plain looking too. Maybe a makeover will also make me pretty...
She looks so much prettier in "Ever After" and in other movies after "Heavenly Creatures" and now. I wonder how it happened?
