Many professional make-up artists insist that, for a flawless, radiant-looking complexion, concealer is the one product you shouldn't skimp on.

To find the perfect concealer for you and your skin type, it's important to have a basic understanding of the different types available on the market. Concealers offer varying types of coverage, a term which refers to how opaque the cosmetic is, and how much it conceals. This cover can be sheer, light, medium or full.

Concealers which are the most transparent of these, and contain the least pigment, may not completely hide heavy discolouration but can reduce the contrast between a blemish and the rest of your skin tone. This makes it perfect for problems such as enlarged pores, for example.

Another advantage of concealer is its lack of heaviness, so that it feels wonderfully light on your skin, making it a particularly good choice for summer. Mineral make-up in particular is gentler on your skin than other types of concealer, such as pressed powders or a traditional liquid.

Mineral-based concealers blend with the oils in your skin to provide incredibly even coverage. This type of cosmetic also reflects light, enhancing your skin's appearance. And not only is it more natural looking, but it's easier to apply and remove as well.

When choosing the colour of your sheer cover concealer, look for one nearest your own natural skin colour. A product which is paler than your skin tone could just make any blemishes stand out more.

At the same time, you may also want to select concealers which are water resistant and fragrance free. If your product is free from perfume, dyes and talc, it won't irritate even the most sensitive skin types.

When it comes to achieving sheer cover from your concealer, use a brush to apply the product under each eye, and then rub it in with your finger. Like well-chosen and well-applied foundation, it should move with the skin. If it begins to cake, it could mean the formula you are using is too dry. You can also apply the product around the nose and lips to lock in your lip colour, and make your lips appear fuller.

Finally, the concealer you choose should also complement and reflect the shade of your foundation. If your base make-up layer, foundation and concealer are all silicon based, then they may well last much longer. However, you can also buy concealers which are water or oil based.
