An upper eyelid lacking excessive fat and skin and one with a well defined crease is considered desirable by many. A defined crease makes the eye appear bigger and more youthful and draws more attention.

These tissues are sutured together and it is the healing and reconnecting of the cut tissues that result in a new and more defined crease. This method is permanent and yields dramatic results. It is however, a more difficult procedure and should only be performed by a licensed plastic surgeon experienced in Asian double eyelid surgery.

The other method, the suture technique is often performed by less experienced surgeons and referred to as the "quick double eyelid surgery" because it takes only 15 minutes. During this procedure, permanent sutures are inserted into the eyelid through small incisions made in the front and back of the lid.

Essentially, the surgeon pulls the lid to a higher position and staples it into place, causing an indentation that resembles a crease. This procedure is much less invasive and costs significantly less, but the results are less dramatic and far from permanent.

Over a short period of time, the suture weakens and the crease disappears. Often times, the sutures above one eye weakens before the suture over the other eye resulting in an imbalanced look and may require undergoing another round of surgery.

Can I sue a plastic surgeon for messing up my eyes?

I got double eyelid surgery a while back, because my upper eyelashes were pushing into my eyes and a optometrist recommended me to go to one to fix the problem or I'll be living with constant red eyes throughout my entire life. So I got a surgery done about 6 months ago, but to my disappointment the eyes came out assemetric and both eyes did not look the same. So I went to go get it redone, but the doctor seemed sort of angry at me that I wanted my eyes done over again. But he said that he would fix it for me and to come by, so I did. But instead of what we talked about doing just two small segments, he redone the whole right eye to make it worse! Omg! I feel so helpless, he messed up my eyes and I look like a monster now~ I signed a paper saying the usual mumbo jumbo that I take full responsibility on taking this surgery. Is there anything that I can do? Can I sue him? And if so in what context can I sue him? Please any help will be greatly appreciated.

I do not know where you are from, but every surgeon is subject to malpractice lawsuits in the United States. The problem you will have with a suit is that it may be deemed a cosmetic issue if the eyelash thing was fixed but you simply do not like the look. In addition, any discussion you had regarding the scope of the surgery will not be admissable in court if you do not have it in writing. It is his word against yours essentially. To add insult to injury, it will be against you that you went back to the same surgeon to fix what you were unhappy with to begin with. Your best bet is to hire a lawyer who can hopefully get other surgeons to state for the record that he botched the job.
