Would it hurt a business to set a customer code of conduct?

I work in a pharmacy and as much as people complain about wait times (which I admit can be long at times) a lot don't seem to be prepared when they arrive in the first place. Some don't know basic insurance info or carry a card. Some don't understand the concept of having to contact an MD for refills. Some don't believe that their insurance won't cover a certain medication. And then there are the ones that demand their prescriptions within minutes because according to them all we have to do is "count a few pills".
I for one get frustrated going that extra step to offer great customer service only to be yelled at and/or blamed for things that a lot of times are out of my control.
Would a business be hurt by asking customers to have some decency and respect for the people that are trying to help them?

A lot of people are selfish, impatient, and -- quite frankly -- not too bright. A customer code of conduct could backfire, however, by making your business seem arrogant and could cost you some business. How about a sign along the lines of "Help us to serve you better" that lists the things you mention in your question -- having insurance card ready, paperwork in order, the note "please be patient so we may guarantee the accuracy of your prescription", etc. The bottom line is that most customers don't care about your problems, they think they are the only ones who matter. The best way to deal with this is to turn it around and make them feel like they have a participatory role in getting the best service.
