Awesome! I truly believe that the best things that MAC makes are their brushes. They last forever if you take good care of them.

As far as figuring out which brushes work best for you, it all depends on what kind of makeup you use. For example, if you use liquid foundation, you'd use a different brush than you would if you used powder foundation... Since MAC brushes aren't cheap at all, it's best to start out with the ones you'll actually use.

So here's my list, conveniently categorized.
FACE:
190 is the standard liquid foundation brush. I've also heard the 109 is quite nice. (I hardly ever wear liquid foundation, but when I do, I personally use a Sonia Kashuk beautyblender dupe and it knocks the socks off of any brush)
182 is great for powder/mineral foundations.
134 is great for powders of any sort.
168 is perfect for contouring. I occasionally use mine for blush too, but I find that the
187 is best for blush. Some people swear by it for foundation application, but in my experience I've found that I prefer the beautyblender dupe and the 182 for foundation.
If I had to pick one out of all of these, I'd go for the 187, because it's the most versatile.

EYES:
239- your standard flat shader brush. It's good to have at least 2 of these if you intend on getting super serious with your makeup application.
224- Blending brush. Everybody should own a blending brush.
217- I love this guy. It's kind of like a hybrid between the 239 and the 224.
266- angled liner brush. This is fantastic for gel eyeliners, or for filling in your brows.
227- big fluffy brush. Perfect for applying highlight colors.
If I could only buy one of these, I'd go for the 217, again because it's the most versatile. Plus, I don't think I've ever really seen a dupe of this brush.

MAC is currently selling a small set called the "perfect style" set. It comes with the 187 (which retails alone for $50) the 168 ($32) the 222 ($28) and the 266 ($19.50) in a really pretty case for $125. Here's a link to that, if you're interested:

Or, if you'd rather take the trial and error approach, I second the recommendation for Sigma brushes. I purchased an entire set for $70 and it's incredible. Totally worthwhile. The quality is exactly the same with most of the brushes, and if I didn't know any better, I could easily mistake them for MAC brushes. If you find there are brushes in the Sigma set that you really like, you can easily buy the MAC versions, because they use the same numbering system. Convenient, eh?
