Belt Apron Bag

The singlestick is a fencing weapon unique to the classical fencing period and to fencing in the United Kingdom and the United States. It is also unusual in that three very distinct forms of singlestick play evolved to meet the needs of three very different groups of fencers.
The singlestick itself consisted of an approximately three foot long stick, usually ash, of approximately 1 inch in diameter. The player's hand was protected by a strong guard, either as a woven basket or of leather. The resulting weapon roughly approximated the weight of an infantry sword or a naval cutlass and was capable of delivering a substantial blow.
The oldest form of Singlestick play that survived into the 1900s was the English village game version, which used a hanging guard with the gamesters placed at approximately blade length apart. Contestants did not wear protective clothing. Depending on the customary practices in the county, the non-weapon arm was allowed to be raised while holding on to a belt, either at the waist or passed through the legs, to protect one side of the body. The basic tactical premise was to beat at the opponent's torso and arms until pain and fatigue forced him to lower his guard. Then a blow to the front of the scalp could cause a "broken head," a measure of one inch of blood flowing from a laceration that defined victory. In many ways this form of swordplay appears to have been very similar to the German academic (student) dueling in the mensur with the schlaeger.
A second form of singlestick play was its use by navies as a training tool for the cutlass, still considered a viable weapon to repel boarders as late as the start of World War II. This may start as early as the early 1800s, and continued well into the 1900s. In this use the singlestick was a drill weapon, a safer alternative to using sharp cutlasses for training. There is ample photographic evidence of this use.
A third form evolved with the development of sport fencing as a form of saber, with the whole body as target and the hit being awarded to the fencer who landed first. Probably the best known sets of rules for this were the Calpe, Military Tournament, and German Gymnasium rules. Traditional fencing footwork and bladework was used, with the exception that the point thrust was not permitted for safety. Protective equipment worn varied, but included a mask similar to the fencing mask, a stout leather jacket, a leather apron, and a front leg guard on the order of a cricket pad. Given that sabre of the day was prone to lusty hitting with a lighter weapon, singlestick was not for the faint hearted.
Sport singlestick made a single appearance at the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games, and was fenced in the Military Tournament for a number of years. However, as fencing became a faster sport that demanded a lighter hand, singlestick did not make the transition, and faded from the competitive scene. Village singlestick may have continued as late as the start of World War II. Today, a few enthusiasts continue to play with singlesticks, but the potential for injury and liability concerns relegate the sticks to a subject of study for classical fencers, rather than a competitive sport.
