It's a fact that cosmetics are big business and there is a great range of cosmetic designers providing an extensive range from eye liners to lipstick. It also goes without saying that these can be very expensive with some of the more well known brands reaching extreme prices. No one wants to be out of pocket, but when it comes to cosmetics it's best to be sure that the product you are buying is a tried and tested brand, for good reason.

Some Hair Dyes can contain various harmful ingredients and recent test have shown that some dark hair dyes may increase the chance of developing a certain type of lymphoma. Furthermore many of these dark hair dyes contain chemicals that are suspected of being carcinogens.

Many Body powders and skin creams are also suspected of containing potentially harmful chemicals. The fact is that with skin creams they have to go somewhere when they are being absorbed into the body. This is not a problem if there is nothing harmful in them. Unfortunately there have been a variety of studies suggesting that some contain chemicals that can affect hormonal balances. This could be potentially harmful for a lot of teenage girls using such products. Body powders can be similarly harmful, as well as also possibly containing carcinogens and could possibly increase the risk of certain cancers.

While sunscreens are made to protect you from harmful U.V. rays, certain kinds could be potentially harmful in other areas. Certain sunscreens contain elements that can cause cellular damage and create free radicals which can increase the risk of a variety of chronic diseases including certain cancers. Some other ingredients can increase the risk of infertility in men.

Nail varnishes often contain a chemical called DBP which some studies have suggested can cause birth defects. Fortunately this chemical has already been banned in Europe and steps to remove it are underway in America. Finally we come to lipsticks. Astonishingly some are proven to actually contain lead which has several harmful effects to the human body when ingested. So why not put it on your lips?

The important thing to do is steer clear of cheap or imitation products and even when buying designer cosmetics check the ingredients and read up on what ingredients can be harmful. Also, ensure you buy quality sunscreens such as Riemann P20.

As long as you keep aware of what harmful ingredients can be in certain cosmetics you can avoid many harmful additives.

Should contestants be disqualified from beauty pageants if they have had cosmetic surgery?

First of all, let me say that I'm completely against the idea of beauty pageants, because they perpetuate the erroneous societal notion that the value of a girl or a woman is based solely on her looks. That being said, though, I remember seeing a few years ago an ad for a cosmetic surgeon's practice in Little Rock that had a picture of two or three Miss Arkansas contestants posing with the doctors. Call me crazy, but I can't help but think that if a person's beauty isn't natural, it doesn't count.

We all do something to enhance our beauty. One extreme is simply washing our face and cutting and brushing our hair. The other is body altering surgery to change our looks.

The question is where do we draw the line for real beauty.

I think things that enhance the beauty you have are OK for pageants. So make up is just fine. Removing hair and even coloring you hair are very accepted ways to enhance your beauty so I think those are fine also.

Surgery is where I would draw the line. If you have surgery for a bigger bust or a smaller nose, I think that should disqualify you.
