To answer this question now: yes, you do. Or if you don't want to apply make-up yourself you need to at least understand some of the basics. Your photography is going to rely heavily on make-up so it stands to reason that you should know something about it. Being ignorant is not the best way to approach your photography and will ultimately let you down.
When broken down to key elements, make-up is not that confronting. There are really only several steps you need to know about the application of make-up. These are in sequence: apply base or foundation make-up, define the eyes, apply blusher to cheeks and finally outline the lips. That's it! Fairly straightforward isn't it?
If you wish to control make-up with your photography, you need to acquire the above application skills. If not, you will have to hire a professional, and they are expensive. Either way here are some tips that you need to check along the way.
1. Keep foundation light and natural. Match the color to the skin on the models neck or chest.
2. Concealers are important for covering dark shadows and blemishes (freckles, acne etc.). Be careful though; anything made darker will fall to dark shadow and anything made lighter will be obvious.
3. Blend all make-up application well. For the best results use professional grade brushes. They are usually bigger and fluffier than those that come with normal cosmetic products.
4. Apply blush to the cheek bones and gently blend it out before the hair line. Care is required here as this is where your lighting picks up tone and form.
5. Cover the skin with talcum powder before applying tanning cream so that any exposed areas are visible.
6. With the eyes apply a neutral basic cover first then build on this. If using pencils apply on top of the base. If using powder, lighten the eyelid with translucent powder first so the shadow will sit better. Emphasis can be applied with eyeliner. Use a thin line and carefully blend.
7. Blot the lips well after applying color and apply some gloss for a sensuous appearance.
8. Use reflected light form umbrellas or reflectors to make the face appear shadowless. Translucent light through diffusers also works very well.
9. A soft focus lens or filter with the lens sopped down will also smooth out the skin.
10. Expose 1 stop over mid-gray to optimize for skin tones.
11. Experiment with warming filters such as light magenta and red to provide a warm glow.
Exploring these tips will provide you with some basic understanding of the elements of make-up. It is an acutely necessary area in glamor and fashion photography and you need to learn all you can to provide the client with professional images.

On occasion, I have been known to sleep in my mascara. Scary...I know. We all dread the morning raccoon eyes and hope that our partner is not looking as we scurry out of bed to wash the black off our eyes. After all...we do NOT want them to see the scary eyed monster we became in the middle of the night! That would not be romantic!
With all the advances in technology, is it possible that someone finally developed a mascara that does not smudge or flake...a mascara that we could sleep in...(only on occasion of course)! The answer is yes!
But before we get to the mascara preferred by several professional make-up artists...including myself, let's review different types of Mascaras available on the market:
Thickening Mascaras: Creates a wider looking lash by plumping out the lash from the root to the tip.
Lengthening Mascaras: Adds fibers to the tips of the lashes to make them appear longer.
Waterproof Mascaras: Just that....waterproof! Difficult to remove, however. Waterproof Mascaras can also be drying and therefore comprise the integrity of your eyelashes.
Tube Mascaras: Tube mascaras forms tiny "tubes" around your lashes which visibly lengthen your lashes.
And the winner is....Tube Mascaras!
Benefits to Tube Mascaras:
Yes...they do lengthen and dramatically add vavoom to your eyelashes!
Clump free
Smudge-proof
Flake-proof
Long-wear
Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers
Removes easily with water
Does not come off with oily skin
Are not an eyelash paint
In my opinion, these mascaras are better than waterproof as the tubes will only come off when warm water and gentle pressure is applied. No make-up remover is required and upon removal, you will actually see the tiny tubes come off into your fingertips. Since both water water and gentle pressure are needed to remove the tubes, this absolutely means long-lasting wear. Say goodbye to those raccoon eyes!
Hands down, Tube Mascara is the best bridal mascara. I always use a Tube Mascara on my brides...particularly those who are prone to crying. Crying does not produce enough water to loosen the tubes' adhesion to your lashes.
My two favorite brands of Mascara that use tube technology include:
Blinc (formerly know as Kiss Me) - approximately $25 per 0.21 oz tube (pioneers of tube mascara!)
Loreal Double Extend® Beauty Tubes™ - approximately $7.75 per tube (0.17 oz basecoat / 0.16 oz topcoat).
When using Mascara on faux eyelashes or eyelash extensions....I prefer Blinc. For everyday wear, I have been happy with Loreal Double Extend® Beauty Tubes™
So go ahead and cry. That's right.....cry your little heart out and guess what...when your done, your mascara will still be there.

You get up in the morning and go about your daily ritual, you're about to wash your face, you look in the mirror and you have this huge red dot with a hideous green center. To make it worse, you've stayed up all night and you have these sad, dark under eye circles that make you look like you need a long vacation. What to do?
Here is a step by step guide to help you cover that humongous crater, those dark under eye circles, and achieve a flawless face.
Step 1: Cover your Bases! (pun intended:P)
With a flat foundation brush, apply foundation or tinted moisturizer on your entire face. Use a shade that matches your skin tone perfectly or else your zit won't be the only thing on your face that's worthy of unwanted attention!
Product used: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Nude
Step 2: Cover your Zit!
Using a small concealer brush, apply your concealer directly onto the pimple. If you don't have a brush, you can use your PINKY finger.:) Apply the most product onto the zit itself, then blend outward until the demarkation line between concealer and foundation is invisible.
A note on concealer SHADE: must match your skin tone, it must not be a lighter shade, contrary to common practice. This enables the concealer to blend with the rest of your makeup. A lighter shade does the opposite--it highlights that area, drawing more attention to your little hill, seeming to say "HEY LOOK AT MY HUMONGOUS ZIT!!" Pick a yellow-based concealer to counter the redness.
A note on concealer CONSISTENCY: must be heavy and thick to allow for better coverage. Cream based products offer the most coverage.
Product used: Kryolan Dermacolor
Step 3: Cover your circles!
Using a large concealer brush, apply a color corrector to the area just under your eyes. Use sparingly to avoid caking, it's easier (and wastes less) to add on products rather than having to wipe it off and re-apply. If you don't have a brush, you can use your RING finger.
As the name suggests, a color corrector is supposed to fix any discoloration problems you are having with your skin. In the case of under eye circles, purplish brown darkness appears on most Asians and Hispanics who have yellow or olive undertones, while pinkish blue darkness appears on most Caucasians and Africans who have pink undertones. A corrector cancels out the purple, blue, or green in under eye discoloration.
The right color corrector shades: Yellow olive undertones - ORANGE/PEACH corrector Pink undertones - PINK/BISQUE corrector
A note on corrector shades: It is always best to test the shade in the cosmetics counter. Do not rely on tips or what the saleslady says is "your shade." We are all unique in skin coloration, so a shade that is perfect for me may look totally off on you. Remember, TEST IT OUT BEFORE YOU SHELL OUT!
Application tip: To see where your circles are darkest, tilt your head slightly downwards then look up into the mirror. The shadows cast onto your face will bring out the darkness. Follow this line when covering up. Dab the product by patting up and down with the brush, then blend outward and sideways to eliminate any harsh lines. Use the most product on the darkest area of the circles.
Product used: Bobbi Brown Corrector in Peach
Step 4. Don't forget the inner corners of your eyes!
Darkness also finds its place there and applying concealer to this area helps brighten it up to reduce the appearance of the dark circles. Blend, blend, blend! Repeat the process on the other eye.:)
Step 5. Ready, Set, Go!
Set your foundation and concealer with powder. A pale yellow powder is best. I prefer it in loose form. Press and roll a velour powder puff onto the skin. Remember to tap off any excess and apply from the chin going upwards onto the rest of the face.
Product used: Bobbi Brown Loose Powder in Pale Yellow
All done! A flawless face in 5 easy steps! Curl your lashes, apply lipstick and you're ready to go.

ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO USE A BRUSH WITH LIQUID MAKEUP?
like this one?
http://www.clinique.com/products/CATEGORY4900/Makeup/Foundations/index.tmpl
cause i use a sponge?
but I want a flawless look, do I use a brush?
The sponges waste a LOT of product. I would rather use a brush. Most professionals use a brush. It will last forever if you take care of it. Be sure to clean it after every use with an antibacterial brush cleaner spray. And, once a week under running water with a very gentle baby shampoo. To get a flawless look, apply with the brush in a 'stippling' (like a tapping) motion, NOT a sweeping, wall-painting motion. Good luck.
What it is: A plush, full-tapered brush to deliver the ultimate complexion luxury. What it does:Its broad head boasts soft, mineral-grabbing bristles prime for building medium-to-full coverage with just a few sweeping strokes. Colors affect not only us, but those around us. They can complement or detract from skin color, eye color and hair color. They imply messages; cool or warm, soft or loud, somber or gay. Cosmetics should reflect the mood and the occasion and they should compliment your attire. Colors should change with the season, and with your fashion choices.
Blues, greens and violet hues are cool, refreshing, restful colors. They can have a calming effect in a busy, hectic environment.
Reds, oranges and yellows are vibrant, fiery, alive. Wear them out; they create excitement and draw attention.
Navy is gentle and lady-like; black denotes sophistication.
Light effects color. In choice of make-up, the light in which it will be seen should affect color selection. Daytime make-up need not be intense; apply it lightly for a natural look. Application of evening make-up should be more liberal; daytime make-up will appear to be nothing at night.
For the office, or any fluorescent-lighted area, make-up needs to act against the coolness of the lighting. Pink-toned make-up base is perfect for such conditions and creates a soft, warm glow. Don't be afraid of color in make-up. You can always blend it off. Below are tips for the best makeup applications:
First, assess your skin's color and needs in daylight. Natural light will give you the truest picture. If you must use artificial light, use white light. Fluorescent lighting disguises true colors.
Whenever possible, sit to apply make-up. This is the most relaxing position. Make-up will go on smoothly and effortlessly.
Both hands must be free, and they must be clean (this step is extremely important). Never apply makeup with dirty hands. It transfers from your hands to the delicate skin on your face.
Wear a relaxed and unanimated expression.
Follow a pattern of application using products in the proper order. Make this a habit; you will be more efficient. Suggested order:
Concealer
Foundation
Powder
Contour and Powder Blush
Highlighter, Brow Lining and brushing
Mascara to top of upper lash
Eye Shadow
Eye Liner
Mascara to bottom of upper lash in upward stroke, Lip liner, Lipstick and Lip Gloss. If Cream Cheek Glo is used, apply after Foundation, before Powder.
Let each product set before applying the next. For best results, the skin should not feel damp to the touch. The mirror should always be at eye level with the head tilted backwards. Do not lean or stoop to look into the mirror. Look down into the glass with the eyes slightly closed when applying eye make-up.
Keep all products tightly closed when not in use.

Everyone turns over 40 years old sooner or later but why must you look that way? Here are a few great makeup tips for those over 40 but would never admit it.
As with all makeup you need to start with great skin. Before you start any makeup application you need to moisturize your face. Make sure you moisturize with creams and serums that are rich with retinals, antioxidants and peptides to help wage war on those all tell all fine lines. Also before applying foundation use a silicone rich primer to help create a smoother finish. Makeup for those over 40 means we need to start wearing foundation to help over up some small problems that have turn up.
If ruddiness (redness) is a problem, try this:
Start by applying a sheer foundation and apply more light layers of foundation over the areas that need more coverage, then gradually build it up till you have full coverage. You will find that a yellow based foundation works best, but do try to match it to your won personal skin tone.
Test on your jaw line in natural light if possible. Don't test it on the back of your hand when trying out foundations, the skin tone won't match and you will find that the color of foundation will be not quite right.
Playing up your eyes:
Eye shadows that you wore when you were in your 30's just may not be right now. Someone had come up with a silly rule that once you hit 40 its time to put away all your favorite vivid greens, purples, pinks eye shadows. Rules are not the same any longer, just change a little. All you need to do is stay away from any eye shadows that are iridescent because they will accentuate any fine lines that you may have.
Still, feel the need to wear one of your favorite color of eye shadow that's a bit wild?
Do this which is a up date for those who wear makeup over 40.
Start with your makeup primer, then apply a neutral color, your browns, beiges, bone then layer over that you favorite I'm not over 40 eye shadow. Don't forget your eyeliner either. Just apply along your lash line then smudge it to help give your lashes a fuller look. Also don't forget to curl your lashes before applying your mascara and if you want really long full eye lashes look into Magic Lash Eyelash Enhancer.
Just because you have turned over 40 doesn't mean your makeup doesn't need to change, only change a little. Tone down some colors, start wearing foundation if you didn't already do so. Start using a cream blush instead of a dry blush, simple things such as that. Drink lots of water and go back to taking on the world at on your terms.

any good eye makeup styles without curling eyelashes?
i have realy straight, thin and small eye lashes. and after using an eye lash curler for a while i decided to give my eye lashes a break is there any good eye make up style that i can do that will still make me look pretty. im so used to having my eyelashes curled that i feel like i look realy weird with out it. does anyone have any picutres or ideas on wat i can do?
ok ive tried so many mascaras and i my eyelashes point almost straight down plus the fact that they are so thin doesnt help because mascara just ends up weighing them down
If you don't curl your lashes, you best friend would need to be mascara. I use the mascara by Elizabeth Arden (i got a free sample) since I lost my eyelash curler a few weeks ago. It's not all clumpy and it hydrates your lashes, it actually helped make them grow.
I also recommend eyeliner but only on the inner and outer corners, not around your complete eye. It looks more natural and casual and helps make your eyelashes more noticeable.

It is easy to be overwhelmed by all the hype surrounding mineral cosmetics. One would think that mineral makeup is the biggest thing that happened in the beauty industry. There may be some truth to this though, as more and more cosmetics companies seem to be coming up with their own line of mineral based makeup to compete with the many smaller brands and lines out there.
The formulation of mineral make-up is catered to those who have sensitive skin, oily skin, and skin that have undergone treatments. The absence of irritants in mineral cosmetics would not cause any inflammation for women with sensitive skin. Mineral foundation make-up does not have emollients that causes pore clogging for women with oily skin, and for women who have undergone acne treatments or more aggressive skin treatments, mineral powder contains ingredients that would help the skin breathe and heal.
Mineral makeup is normally in powdered form, and these types of products are often called "pure mineral", while other products that are in pressed or compact form are known as "mineralized". The latter contain waxes and binding agents that may rule out the effect of some of the mineral's potency, and may in fact cause breakouts. The safer bet would always be to go for the mineral powder makeup form whenever possible.
Does it follow though that the more expensive the brand is, the more effective it is? Not necessarily. When it comes to choosing a brand of mineral make-up, it is always good to do your research on the ingredients used, as well as the type of skin that you have. There may be some ingredients in mineral foundation that may be harmful to your skin, so it is always safe to consult your dermatologist before using a particular brand, such as Bare Minerals makeup.
For a lot of women, mineral cosmetics could possibly be the answer to their prayers. In this day and age when cosmetic surgery seems to be a common thing, the market for natural makeup products is already established and is growing day by day.
Visit these links to learn more about Bare Minerals makeup, and get tips on how to use a kabuki brush to apply your mineral foundation makeup to perfection!
