If you are like most hobbyists or scrapbookers, you know that low cost equipment, while it saves you money, ultimately breaks. Most of the time, these machines or equipment do not even offer replacement parts. Many go on buying cheap equipment after cheap equipment, and spend sometimes hundreds of extra dollars. Why bother? There are so many machines out there that cost a little more than the average low cost solution, but last longer, and work more efficiently.
Here are some recommendations that I have when it comes to higher quality hobby equipment. With the holidays coming up, these will serve as excellent gifts for you or your favorite hobbyist.
1. Professional Grade Rotary Trimmer
Rotary paper trimmers are easy to use, and guarantee a straighter cut than a guillotine cutter. These trimmers can cut in two directions, making them ideal for photo cutting, and scrapbooking. The Dahle rotary trimmers offer professional quality for less. These machines are so accurate, that many print shops and advertising agencies use them. They are more expensive then the cutters that you will find Michaels, but with the smallest cutter starting at $42, they are quite a steal.
2. Professional Pouch Laminator
Anyone who values photographs should invest in a pouch laminator. These affordable machines keep photographs safe from exposure to dust, finger tips, and more. While personal laminators offer an easy lower cost solution, a more professional model will last longer, and will be less likely to jam. A good jam free laminator is priced around $100-200, and will laminate smaller pouches as well as letter size documents with ease. Professional laminators also heat up and laminate documents faster than personal models.
3. Wire Binding Machine
While many scrapbookers tend to use comb binding machines, I recommend wire. Wire binding looks a little more professional and keeps it shape longer. Binding machines have many possibilities for projects. Notebooks, recipe books, calendars, scrapbooks, and more can all be done quickly and easily without having to go to the local print shop. An Akiles manual wire binding machine is perfect for low volume use, and is priced around $270.00. It can punch and bind in either 2:1 for low volume projects and 3:1 for higher page volume projects. It uses Double O Wire spines, which are easy to close and look great.
While these machines may be a little more pricey than your average equipment found at the fabric store, they provide professional quality for the home and make a great gift for anyone who loves creative projects.

How to trim a cats split ends?
Her hair is looking rather wily and I think she could do with a trim up. Any tips? I imagine a regular comb and scissors would work, but if anyone has any advice, it'd be great.
Phantom, that wasn't helpful at all. Please answer the question, not make up your own questions and answer them.
Best not to mess with a cat's fur: it causes unnecessary stress for the cat. Daily brushing is a great bonding exrecise and will keep your cat's coat in tip top condition.

Matte bronzers are harder to find than one would think; most of them contain a sheen, sparkle or some sort of shine. Cargo Bronzing Powder in Medium Matte for $25 it's a beautifully subtle bronzer. My all-time favorite is the Clinique matte bronzer. It's not orange the way that some bronzers can look. The price point is decent as well; Clinique is one of the affordable department store brands.
Make sure to apply bronzers with a larger powder brush. Simply using your blush brush can run you into trouble. The problem is that a blush brush will concentrate the color into a small area. You might end up with severe-looking streaks. With bronzer you want a more global glow. I recommend investing in a large powder brush. Sephora or Ulta are great retailers for brushes. My favorites include the Vincent Longo Deluxe Blush Brush, the Sephora professional bronzer brush, and the Nars bronzer brush. Remember, brushes are an investment, so they may seem expensive. But brushes are a one-time purchase if you maintain them. Frequently wash them with mild soap or makeup brush soap. Ulta and beauty supply stores sometimes have sales, so you might want to hunt for a good price.
Another route to take would be to try a liquid bronzer. They are blendable, the intensity of color can be controlled and they finish matte. This choice might be scary for some. A liquid bronzer seems hard to control and dark when it squeezes out of the bottle. But it's really quite simple to use. They're easier to blend than a traditional powder-based product: use two fingers held together and blend in a circular motion on the apples of the cheek outward, your forehead and the chin area. As a fair-skinned girl, I recommend the Stila Sun gel bronzer - It's going to look the most natural, without any shine. To take any shine out of the finish, apply your usual translucent powder. And, a beach glow without the sun!
And yet another option would be to try a gradual face self-tanner. I like this option because it makes your face look beautiful with very little makeup on. I am not a fan of the Jergens Daily Glow for face product. I do like the Jergens Daily glow for body though. I frequently break out from the face lotion, though. I've heard this complaint from many women as well. I absolutely love Lancome self-tanning products for the face. The color is believable and does not streak. So for summer, consider doing a longer wearing face-décolleté tan with a self tanner.
Whether you choose bronzer, liquid bronzer or a self tan, the best bet is to try a few products. Go to a beauty retailer like Macy's, Sephora and Ulta and choose the product right for your skintone. Obviously make sure to use test applicators, and use your discretion to keep things hygienic. But every skintone is different so doing the legwork is a smart option.
How would you preserve and paint and preserve a squirrel cage circulating fan for a furnace?
The blades are rusty looking. I was thinking about sanding them or using maybe a tube brush on them to remove the rust and then ragging on a primer and then enameling them. Any suggestions?
There's absolutely no reason not to refinish and continue to use it, provided the rust isn't excessive to the point that blades are deteriorating. Paint on some rust gel, the chemical reaction turns the rust into a stable material. You can paint it on without removing the blades probably. Follow directions on the gel. You'll probably have to hose the cage off as a last step. Then get a good quality primer in a spray can - not the cheapest, a good quality. Spray it and get good coverage. You could stop there, without having to add any other paint. I'd prime it with a gray color and be done with it. The weight from the paint will be very much negligible and won't affect the spinning action. Also, I'd give it a good oiling, maybe even use grease vs. oil, to ensure a smooth spinning operation. If you use grease, you may improve the operation of the cage better than when it was brand new.
Good luck!

This season's make-up is chic, flattering and even better anti-aging. Here's some more tips to make them work for you!
Matching Lips and Nails
Perfectly applied lipstick and matching nails = instant chic!
It's a pull together, sophisticated look. Choose a bright, fun shade like Essie's Fruit Sangria or Red Hot Mamma nail polish and Bare Escentuals Red Delicious Lipstick or Passion Fruit for a subtle but striking youth boost!
Tricks
Dab and blend concealer such as Bare Escentuals Bisque onto your lips first- this will tone down your natural lip colour so that your lipstick looks more vibrant. Next, apply a creamy lipstick using a brush. Finish with a slick of clear gloss over the top. For the nails, apply Orly Bonder Base Coat, two coats of polish and Seche Vite Top Coat.
Tip
Use a polish corrector pen to tidy up any smudges - think precise and ultra neat!
Blushed Lips
Lips lose their healthy redness and plumpness as we age, so inject a subtle hint of colour. "A gentle flush of red or pink can give you a fresh and youthful appearance" Sara comments.
Tricks
Super soft lips are a must, so mix a red or deep pink lippy, such as Bare Escentual Red Zin or strawberry daiquiri lipstick with a rich lip plumping buxom babe gloss to create a soft finish.
Tip
This look works well with gently blushed cheeks. Use Bare Escentuals Fruit Cocktail or Joyous Jennifer Blush.
Perfect Skin
The quickest way to perfect skin = great homecare and salon treatments!
Tricks
Forget department store brands, you're only paying for their marketing campaigns or the sales assistants' commission! Choose to buy a salon only range such as MD Formulations or Collin Paris. These contain a higher amount of active ingredient to give you a much better result. This way you will receive personal advice by a qualified skin specialist.
Tips
For quick and easy cleansing, try Collin Paris; wash-off Hydro-cleanser as this can also be used over your eyes. For instant results, try MD Formulations Age Lifting in-salon treatment to give you that wow factor!

i want to wear a neutral eye shadow, how should i put it on?
i want something neutral and not too bright like some other girls at my school wear it. any tips on how i should do it, like blending darker and lighter kind of thing (my sisters have bare escentuals, thats what kind of foundation i have, so i was thinking of getting bare escentuals)
get a palette of three neutral colors (a light, medium and dark) use the medium or base color all across eyelid going up to the edge of the bottom of your eyebrow. Next put a streak of the darkest color just above the crease of your eye and sweep it to the outer edge. With your finger blend the lightest color at the very top of your eyelid just under your eyebrow and not extending too far down. And VOILA! you have a neutral looking yet enhancing eyeshadow.
Bare Escentuals Blending Brush - -
$26.40
This brush is made of finest quality of hair Helps apply eyeshadow or glimmer over eyelid Softens contour color, blends concealer & adds dimension to face Corrects mistakes by smoothing everything out for a soft, seamless look Medium-textured, full brush head gives light color intensity to eye zone An ideal tool for a natural & flawless makeup effect...
You will need a highlighter, dark eye pencil or shadow and two colored eye shadows.
Cover the entire eye area from brow to lashes with this color. Draw a three quarter line along the edge of the lower lid, fading away as you move toward the nose. Draw another line along the top lid just beyond the outer edge of the iris of the eye. This line should be drawn thicker and extend into a triangle shape. Blend with a cotton bud or sponge tip applicator to soften the look. Keep your pencil sharp and if necessary, warm the point against the palm of your hand before starting to use it.
Color one should be a darker color than the highlighter but lighter than color two. This color is used on the inner area of the eye from the eyebrow down the side of the nose and in towards the corner of the eye.
Color two should harmonize with color one but choose a slightly darker shade. This is the most important color and is used along the top lid over the pencil next to the eyelashes and then blended over the socket line in a softly rounded shape. This color is not winged outwards.
When using a mascara, use a black mascara only if you have dark lashes. Black is not always the most flattering color. Brown and gray can be very effective and, of course, there are now lots of fun colors which can be very appropriate when making up for the evening or a special occasion. It can be effective to start with the neutral color and add the fun color over the top or just to the tips of the lashes.
Begin by brushing down the top lashes from above and then brush up from below, making sure to catch the outer lashes as well. Carefully touch the lower lashes with color and use a cotton bud to catch any blobs. If the lashes lie very flat on the face, carefully place a tissue underneath before applying. Several thin coats are better than one thick one and if necessary, the lashes can be separated with your lash comb.
As for your lipstick, this is the area where people seem to have strong feelings, so this must be taken into account seriously. Some people prefer to apply foundation to the mouth before adding lipstick, so you may like to experiment with this and see if you find it preferable. Certainly it is necessary if you are planning to change the shape of the mouth.
If you are mastering the techniques of using a lip pencil and brush, you should make a habit of using them on yourself daily in order to increase your proficiency.
The larger mouth may benefit from a darker shade or a lack of proportion may be corrected by using different lipstick shades. When corrections are needed to the shape of the mouth, it is important to make them look as natural as possible. If you are going to reshape your mouth, you will need to cover the natural shape with foundation or concealer and powder before drawing in the improved line. Fill in the shape with a lip brush in the usual way.
A slightly darker lip pencil is more effective for outlining, but when discussing a line, you may want to blend in rather than stand out, so bear this in mind when choosing your color. It can also help to use a pale pearl lipstick which will tend to draw attention to itself rather than the mouth shape.

There are a lot of products on the haircare market these days and because of this it can sometimes be hard to find products which are suitable for your needs. There is so much available that it can be confusing and a lot of people end up with the wrong products for their hair type.
Choosing products for your hair shouldn't be hard and if you follow these steps, you should save money and end up with a product that's perfect for your hair. There are a few leading brands that spring to mind straight away when you think of haircare and one of those is Kerastase Bain.
Kerastase Bain is a huge range of high quality haircare products that are ideal for all hair types. However, you may have to test a few products before you buy. There are a few things you'll need to think about before you head out to the shops. Firstly, you'll need to consider a budget.
Working out a budget for your purchases should be relatively easy. All you need to do is make sure that you do your research. Head online and have a pen and paper with you, while you're browsing, and make a note of the prices so you end up with an average price for the things that you're interested in.
You should then be able to work out a budget that will prevent you from overspending - or worse under spending. Bear in mind that cheap products will be cheap for a reason and although you can get good deals on products like Kerastase Bain, you'll need to be wary of products that are a lot cheaper that others.
Once you have a budget in mind, you'll then be able to do your price comparison research in order to get yourself the best deals possible. While you were researching for a budget, you'll have made a note of prices and you'll be able to use this information to figure out where the best deals are.
However, you'll need to consider quality and price in order to find the best deals - for example, just because a price is very low doesn't mean it's a good deal, you'll need to consider the quality of the products as well. Kerastase Bain products are usually very high in quality so getting good deals might take you a while.
There are a lot of places you can go in order to find yourself the best deals. You should definitely look online to start with because although stores like Boots and Superdrug sell these products, you'll want to find the best offers and the internet usually has all the best prices.
There is also a lot more choice online because you have access to worldwide products, not just UK based products. Overall, as long as you do your research and ensure that you set a budget as well as perform price comparison, you should find that getting a good deal for Kerastase Bain or any other haircare products should be easy.
Writer Declan K Poole talks about selecting Kerastase Bain products. http://www.wantthelook.com has great information on Kerastase Bain products, you'll definitely be able to get what you wish for.
revlon's new collection and makeup eraser pen?
I was thinking I might buy some of revlon's new limited edition collection and I was wondering what works, what doesn't and if it is really worth it, and I also wanted to know if the revlon makeup eraser pen works like they say it should.
I use the makeup eraser pen and a couple of things to watch out for:
1) It's kind of liquidy so after use dab the area you used it dry
2) after using it wipe it off so you don't get residue from the last use on yourself when you use it again.
And the limited edition collection:
The sugar sugar lip topping is a powder you can put ontop of your lipgloss, try to see if you would like that by puting a glitter powder (that you already have) ontop of your lipgloss
the midnight swirl gloss: its two glosses that you really need to make sure are mixed will or it won't look good
velvet creme lipstick: It is a lipstick that they said they use something to make it velvety smooth and soft, even if it isn't super smooth or soft it still is lipstick you can use
Bite Me Lipstain: It is a classic lipstain that if you wanted too you could probably use on your cheeks
Golden affair blush: It is made to sculpt cheeks but make sure that the two colors are blended together well enough that you can really tell that there are two separate colors
Pinch me blush: It is a light gel blush to give a natural looking flush, but test it before you buy because sometimes these blushes don't show up so well on darker skin
bare it all lotion: they say it is a lotion that has a very sheer tint of color so you might not have to worry about it looking like a mask, and they say it has a formula to make you look luminous and romantic
bare it all powder: going hand in hand with the above it is a light soft powder that they say illuminates the same way as the lotion
diamond lust shadow: this is one of the more foolproof products, it is a really sheer shadow with pearl powder which creates a beautiful diamond like look.
molten metal shadow: it is a liquid eyeshadow that comes in really firy colors, the first couple times you try it put it on lightly to make sure it dries right and doesn't drip into your eyes
bedroom eyes eyeliner: It is a powder eyeliner that is ment to look really sexy because it is sort of smudged and smoky, just it could get a little messy so you may need a little makeup remover for touch ups
lash jewels: This one is the biggest risk because you are running a risk that you can easily mess up putting on the crystals, and they might not harden and just be liquidy and disgusting and even run into your eye
All the nail polishes and appliques are going to be pretty foolproof. the pink polish is really good for something sweet and innocent and the darker one is good for more sexy and seductive. and the appliques can go with the two polishes above (there are two colors one sweet and romantic and the other darker and more seductive) or put on top of another nail enamal.

S'mores are one of the best campfire treats in the world (right after pudgie pies) with gooey toasted marshmallow melting smooth and luscious milk chocolate that's nestled between two crisp pieces of graham cracker. Yummmm......I want one (okay, two or three) right now (even though as I am writing this it is snowing outside and there is already more than 2 feet of snow on the ground.)
But although I have been brave and adventurous about trying many variations of s'mores I am still a purist at heart. To me there is only one way to make them and the choice of the three ingredients needed (marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers) is as important as the preparation process.
Marshmallows - First of all, the marshmallows need to be fresh. Don't try to use up the half bag of marshmallows leftover from last year that are as hard as a rock. Crack open your wallet and spend a dollar or two on a fresh bag. Campfire brand marshmallows are best if you can find them, but Kraft's are pretty good too. Buy the big ones. Don't mess around with the miniature marshmallows.
Chocolate - There's only once choice and that is a Hershey's milk chocolate candy bar - 3 pieces per s'more.
Graham crackers - Honeymaid honey grahams are the best. Don't try to get creative and use the cinnamon flavored ones - they're just yucky with s'mores.
Preparing the s'more is as important as the ingredients. But let's talk about equipment first. In the "good old days," before restrictions on disturbing anything in nature at campgrounds and parks, if you wanted to toast marshmallows you went to a tree and broke off a long skinny branch. You pushed your marshmallow on the branch and started toasting. That's what I did as a kid (I didn't go camping as a child but we often toasted marshmallows over the hot coals of our charcoal grill at home). It didn't matter that the marshmallow often tasted faintly of tree sap nor did we ever stop to consider how many bugs or birds had touched that piece of wood and left things on it that are better left unsaid.
There are now roasting forks available at any large discount store or sporting goods store with an outdoor/camping section. Buy a hot dog fork instead of a marshmallow fork and skip the fancy retractable or folding ones. They have a tendency to retract or fold when you don't want them to. A hot dog fork works better than a marshmallow fork because the two prongs are farther apart which makes it easy to roast two marshmallows at once and because they are usually longer than marshmallow forks. Plus, then you'll have a fork that can do double duty, roast marshmallows and cook hot dogs or sausages. You can get a good quality hot dog fork for under $10 and sometimes for less than $5.
Okay, let's get back to making that s'more. Place one or two marshmallows on the hot dog fork. Toast the marshmallow to a golden brown over the campfire, remembering to turn the marshmallow so it's toasted on all sides, not just on the third of it that's closest to the fire. Notice that I didn't say to start it on fire and char it to unrecognizable blackness. Marshmallows are not meant to be ignited and charred to a crisp. If your campfire is shooting up 3 foot flames, wait. Marshmallow roasting is best done with the wood is ashy and has glowing embers, which means you will have a hot fire with very little flame.
Immediately transfer the marshmallow to a graham cracker half that has 3 pieces of Hershey's milk chocolate on it (or both marshmallows if you managed to get them both toasted without losing one to the campfire and if you like a really gooey s'more; otherwise be a "sharer" and give the extra marshmallow to someone else). Using the other graham cracker half, squish the marshmallow so that it covers all the chocolate to start melting it. Stop squishing when the marshmallow starts oozing out the sides of the graham crackers.
Then quickly eat it before someone steals it from you and enjoys the perfect s'more you have made. Share the secrets of making smores with everyone you know and encourage them to practice; otherwise you'll be spending all your campfire time making s'mores for everyone else and what fun is it to make them if you don't get to eat them?
And if someone tells you that you can make a smore in the microwave that tastes just as good as one made over a campfire, they are a liar or they have never had s'more made over a campfire.
Oh and I forgot one last thing you will need and that is wipes to clean up your sticky and gooey hands after eating your masterpiece!

Like many of you looking to achieve beautiful eye makeup, I am constantly learning and researching tips for improving my eye makeup capabilities. Over time I have reached the conclusion that eye makeup application is not that difficult once you learn some of the "special" eye makeup techniques and eye makeup tricks. Join me as we learn how to apply professional looking eye makeup step by step.
Step 1: "Choose Eye-Shadow Colors Carefully"
Select eye-shadow colors that contrast with or heighten the coloration of your eyes instead of matching it precisely. Violet eye shadow, for instance, exposes the green in hazel eyes; topaz causes brown eyes to look deeper. Mauve, coral and gray are complimentary to blue eyes.
Eye shadow ought to also enhance your skin tone and the color in your clothing. Softened shades appear most effective in the daytime; use iridescent or brilliant colors at night, if at all.
Step 2: "Determine Your Eye Factors"
Hopefully you have noticed by now that not everyone has the same shaped eyes. This fact is very important as it will determine the eye makeup technique for applying eye- shadow. So before you proceed any further, stop and examine your eye shape by looking in a mirror or have someone else observe and tell you whether your eyes are:
classic egg-shaped (oval) or not
small and recessed or striking
close together (close set) or wide apart (wide set).
These three factors play a prominent part in the eye makeup application that follows, so it is vital that you are as accurate as possible with your observation. Perhaps have several people help with this step for a better result.
Step 3: "Shading Tips"
If your eyes are the classic egg-shaped, apply a medium shade from the eye crease to the eyelashes, a somewhat darker shade on the eye crease, and a light shadow along the browbone. Blend in the colors upwards and out. If you eyes are less than perfect ovals, you are able to redefine their shape with shadow. Bear in mind that a light color will bring an eye area forwards; a dark color will reduce it.
To make small or sunken eyes seem bigger, use a pale shade from the browbone to the lashes. Broaden them even more by employing a small "V" of slightly darker shade just on the far side of the outer eye corners. Large eyes will appear smaller if you use a dark shade all over the full lid just about to the browbone.
To make close-set eyes appear farther separated, use a pale shade on the third of the eyelids nearest the nose, a darker shade close to the temple. Reverse this to cause wide-set eyes to appear closer together.
Step 4: "Shaping Techniques"
Utilize a liquid or pencil eyeliner to accent shape. Draw a thin line as near the eyelashes as possible, as well on the outer third of the lower lid; smear it lightly for a natural look.
Step 5: "Mascara Tricks"
For a "wide-awake" effect, use an eyelash curler prior to putting on mascara. Hold up the curler near the base of the eyelashes and squeeze; count to three, then let go. Move the curler further out towards the tips of the lashes and squeeze once again.
Put on mascara with your eyes open. Grasping the wand vertically, coat the tips of the upper eyelashes, and then drag the wand horizontally across the lashes from base to tips. If you wish, you can likewise brush mascara to the lower lashes. If any eyelashes bunch up, divide them with the wand tip. Employ a cotton swab for cleanups.
Congratulations! If you closely followed the basic eye makeup techniques and eye makeup tricks as directed above, you should now be looking at some beautiful eye makeup. If you did not get the results you wanted, please try again. Like most things in life, whether learning to ride a bicycle, learning to skate, etc., it all gets easier and better with practice. In no time at all you will be able to apply such perfect eye makeup that your friends will think you paid to have it done!

How do i keep my eyeshadow from falling on my eyelashes?
Im 13 and im just starting to wear makeup and i use like a sparkely pink shadow from Ulta and it falls on my eyelashes(they are really long) and it makes them look pink and weird. how do i stop this from happening?
you can either use an eyeshadow that is not as loosely pressed. Or there may be some issues with your brushes, it may not be dense enough. so make sure you have a good brush!
you can prime also, but primers are often costly so an alternative solution is to use a pear/white/beige cream shadow, apply that on your lid first so the eyeshadow is more likely to stick.
OR... you can just apply the eyeshdw on your lids with your fingers, blowing excess off before applying, there would be a massive reduction to shadows falling on your lashes

Soon after leaving the Polytechnic on our right we come to the formal gardens in front of the gracious facade of the National Archaeological Museum, planned by Ludwig Lange of Darmstadt, in 1860. The foundation stone was laid in 1866, but work was soon suspended owing to insufficient funds. It was not until some twenty years later, after Demetrios Bernardakis had donated the princely sum of a quarter of a million gold drachmas for this purpose, that building was resumed and the project finally completed under the supervision of Ernst Ziller in 1889.
During more than eighteen centuries of foreign domination, from the Roman conquest to the expulsion of the Turks, Greek art was the object of both envy and abhorrence. The Roman emperors despoiled Athens of her greatest masterpieces of sculpture for the adornment of Rome and Constantinople; while the Early Christians in their determination to efface every trace of "pagan" art, the brutish soldiery of the Middle Ages, who melted down priceless bronze statues for cannon, all contributed to the systematic destruction of Greek painting and sculpture, so that when Greece finally achieved independence it seemed inconceivable that a single example of ancient art should have survived on its native soil. In spite of these immeasurable disasters the National Archaeological Museum of Athens possesses the world's finest collection of Greek antiquities, among which works of art from Neolithic times to the Roman period are fully represented.
We now enter into the Museum. The beginnings of Greek art are vividly exemplified in the unrivalled prehistoric collection housed in three rooms immediately opposite the entrance hall. In these rooms are displayed exhibits from the Neolithic Age, the Helladic Bronze Age, in which the principal is the golden treasure of Mycenae, found in graves excavated by Schliemann near the Acropolis of Mycenae in 1876 and enriched by later excavations and, finally, the Cycladic Bronze Age which contains objects of the same epoch (second millennium) from the islands of the Cyclades.
From the Mycenaean Hall we return to the entrance hall, and pass into the room on the right. This is the first of seven rooms of Archaic sculpture from the eighth century BC to the eve of the Classical period (480 BC). Then follows a succession of rooms, each opening into the next, and containing rare examples of sculpture from Classical, Hellenistic and Roman times.
Left of the staircase leading to the upper floor of the Museum, where a vast collection of Ceramics from Neolithic to Classical times has been assembled, is the splendid Karapanos collection of antiquities, principally small bronzes, from the Archaic period to Roman times, donated in 1902. On our left as we prepare to leave the Museum is the sumptuous collection of objects, particularly jewelry, of all periods from the Bronze Age to Byzantine times, presented to the Nation by Helen Stathatos in 1957.
The National Archaeological Museum also maintains an Epigraphic section, entrance to which is from its side, facing the Polytechnic School.
After leaving the Archaeological Museum we turn right and continuing along Odhos Patission we soon reach a square, beyond which is the large park of pedion tou areos. Before the main entrance to the park stands a bronze equestrian statue of King Constantine I by the Italian master Paricci.
Left of this statue a road through the park leads right to an avenue flanked by marble busts of the principal figures of the War of Independence. At the end of this avenue we take the left-hand path for the church of the Taxiarchi, in the garden of which is the oldest monument of Modern Athens. This is the memorial raised in honor of the Sacred Band, a body of students recruited from among the Greek population of Moldo-Vlachia (in present-day Romania). On the outbreak of the Greek revolution of 1821 these young men placed themselves in the van of the Greek troops that had entered these provinces. Though filled with patriotic fervor they were mostly untrained and poorly armed, and in their eagerness to engage the enemy they advanced too far ahead of the main body. On June 7th 1821 they were surprised by a strong force of Turkish regulars against whose disciplined attack the heroism of their small numbers was of no avail. Before the main body of Greek troops, from which their impetuosity had isolated them, was able to come to their assistance, the Sacred Band was annihilated (battle of Draghatsani).
Seven years after the battle the commander of the Greek forces, Prince Alexander Ypsilantis, a Greek officer who had reached the rank of major-general in the Russian Army, died in Vienna. After resting for more than a hundred and thirty-five years in the Austrian capital, his mortal remains were brought to Athens and reentered close by the monument to the Sacred Band. A masterly statue showing him lying in state marks his grave.
On the south side of the park, facing Leophoros Alexandras, is a more recent war memorial. This impressive monument in Pentelic marble was designed by Phaidon and Ethel Kydhoniates. It was erected to commemorate the valiant part played by the fighting men of Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand in the defense of Greece during the Nazi invasion of 1941, and was unveiled in 1952. Three cenotaphs bearing respectively the arms of Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, precede the statue of a lion seated before a tall column on which stands the figure of Athena Promachos: the splendid statue is the work of Vasileios Phalireas.
